It is actually way better for 100 addicts to get their fix on pain pills than a single person in pain go without. I call this the "Torture is bad" principle. You should be able to get the good stuff forever after a single doctor's visit. If you're worried about addicts fund rehab centers and needle exchanges instead of torturing people.

"it's really fucked up your grocer can decide to cut you off of food because they're worried you're getting too fat. They should advise you on what to do to eat healthy, but they s shouldnt be able to starve you."

"Yes, but have considered that a lot of people eat really unhealthily, and that CORPORATIONS made food very tasty and addicting to get people to eat more? Therefore, grocers should still be able to force you into a diet."

What left wing criticisms of “New Atheism” should be:

*Thinking of religion purely in intellectual terms and viewing the matter of class as a product of that rather than the other way around.

*Not talking enough about the role of religion in imperialism and colonialism not simply as justification but in terms of how organized religion was an inherent part of colonial states both in theocratic hegemonic forms (Iberian colonialism) as well as recruiting native religious elites to serve as agents of the colonial state (Dutch East Indies)

*Eurocentric understanding of the history of atheism and criticism of religion that views opposition to (organized) religion as a modern product of the European Enlightenment and not something with an intellectual history going back far deeper and longer in places such as India and the Near East

*etc

What is not a left wing critique New Atheism:

*Getting upset people are criticizing religion at all

*Getting upset atheists articulate their reasons for being atheists in any form other than “It’s for purely personal reasons”

*Doubling down on Eurocentrism by aggressively asserting that criticism of religion is only done by white people and non-whites are all super religious fae creatures or whatever

Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs and can cause liver failure. It is commonly found in peanut butter, chewing gum, and ice cream. End ID.]

as far as i can tell antiwork is the snappy name a lot of people have chosen for a nuanced set of positions that fight against capitalist grindset culture and advocate for better working conditions, a healthier relationship to our jobs, and a more fulfilling life.

but none of this is really implied by the antiwork label, and there are a small but loud minority that embody exactly the stupid strawman you might imagine upon hearing the term for the first time

this has happened approximately 5000 times over the history of online leftism

aksemmi

i am willing to advocate (what I imagine to be?) the “strawman” here!

but also i think this is sort of implying something backwards. afaict, the more radical interpretation was “the original” and it got watered down as a slogan as it grew in popularity

idk how much this made the news in the Americas but the Hellenic coast guard watched as a vessel carrying more than 400 (some estimates say 700) migrants capsized and sank in the Mediterranean. 104 people survived. official death toll is 79 because the rest is missing, and might never be found. There are claims that many children were below deck.

Frontex and the Hellenic Coast Guard was aware of the vessel and the dangerous situation it was in for days, but did not intervene

The coast guard released this photo. They came this close but did not intervene. EU and the Greek coast guard sat and waited for this boat to sink

Survivors and rescuers claim that the boat capsized after being towed by the coast guard at high speed.

if this is true, at best they caused an accident out of carelessness and immediately retreated to cover it up, or they committed a massacre.

id: a series of tweets about a boat, with migrants on it, capsizing and leaving 104 survivors.

tweet one, from niki kitsantonis, reads: "Photos of migrant boat taken by Greek coast guard helicopter on Tuesday indicates hundreds were aboard. Official death toll so far 79 with 104 survivors. Shipping Ministry official says boat sunk in spot where sea is 4,000 meters deep, so retrieving other victims may be impossible."

the photos attached are of a blue (?) boat with people packed like sardines in the middle of the water.

tweet two reads: "The vast search and rescue operation continues with hundreds missing and at least 78 dead, the Hellenic Coast guard said in a statement on Thursday. A new photo has been released by #Greece's coast guard showing the fishing vessel that appears to be photographed at night time."

the photo attached is of the boat at night time.

tweet three, from iasonas apostolopoulos, reads: "[thread emoji] New item that completely changes the data! Rescuers revealed that the new coast guard was towing them at high speed, this destabilized the boat and sank it! If this is true, we are not talking about criminal negligence, but about an act that caused the death of 600 people."

the video attached is of a middle-aged man, with his arms folded, wearing an n95 mask, surrounded by people.

Here's an article about the time in 2017 there was a boat full of refugees in distress, and authorities from Libya, France, Italy, and Portugal came and watched the boat but did nothing to intervene or help those that were actively drowning... and then a German NGO (non-governmental organisation) ship came along, was told by the Libyan coast guard to stay away, ignored those orders and came in close to start fishing drowning people out of the ocean.... and then the Libyan coast guard interfered with the rescue, trying to prevent it, and at one point even threw a barrage of potatoes at the rescue team in an attempt to get them to leave the refugees to drown.

The captain of the ship who rescued people is, afaik, still awaiting trial, facing 20 years in prison for "assisting illegal immigration." She and her crew rescued 59 people from certain death whilst authorities from four different countries either looked on or actively interfered. There another 20 people (approx) who didn't survive, and were lost beneath the waves, but for saving the lives of nearly 60 people, Pia Klemp and 9 others face the threat of 20 years jail.

So this news that's slowly coming out that the Greek coast guard either caused the tragedy or deliberately held back from assisting, either causing or allowing huge numbers of deaths? Sounds very, very credible to me, given that it's exactly the sort of thing that European authorities have been doing to refugees for YEARS.

Though actually, cute thing: there are "standard" photos of the Kowloon Walled City that are always passed around, and they tend to be the most modern ones due to quality & availability reasons:

image

But these are from a unique period in its history, namely the end of its history - right before it was demolished. However, it wasn't the only thing to go; its removal was part of a much wider project to level and redevelop the entire area of the Kowloon City District. It just happened to be the last part to go due to its size and legal complexity. That "island of concrete in a desert" look is essentially a fiction:

image

It was really the heart of a dense urban ecology of low-income development that had emerged over 30+ years in the postwar era.

And you can see how integrated it was with its surroundings, the "walls" were after all purely a legal concept:

image

The common photos imo are also popular because they heighten the dystopian aspects of the city, making it appear like a tumor infecting the area. Once you see it in its proper context its place as an organic part of the city is much more clear.
